Vintage modifieds running the tracks of the Northwest since 1986. Real cars, real drivers. The spirit of 1950s through early '70s circle-track racing — kept alive by the crews who refuse to let it die.
The Vintage Modified Racing Association (VMRA) is a non-profit Northwest racing club founded in 1986 at Spanaway Speedway, Washington. We organize vintage modified circle-track races across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, preserving the spirit of 1950s through early 1970s modified stock car racing through a rulebook built for authenticity and integrity. VMRA cars feature custom-built tube chassis, American-made car bodies from 1969 or older, and carbureted small-block V8 engines limited to 370 cubic inches. The cars are required to weigh a minimum of 2,950 pounds and run on 10-inch-wide Hoosier slick tires to ensure fair competition. The 2026 season is our 40th Anniversary tour, running 11 events across premier short tracks including Evergreen Speedway (Monroe WA), Tri-City Raceway (West Richland WA), Wenatchee Valley Super Oval (East Wenatchee WA), South Sound Speedway (Rochester WA), and Stateline Speedway (Post Falls ID). With 23 active drivers on the roster, the club continues to deliver authentic, high-horsepower racing to the Northwest.
This is the car that started it — Ernie Conwell's original #72, the same number, the same Northwest Concrete Cutting sponsor, the same club. The blue paint and white front clip in this photograph is why Vince's modern #72 wears the colors it does today.
When Car #72 rolls out this season with “In Memory of Ernie Conwell” on the roof, this is who it's for.
Steve Woods found the speed he was looking for at Evergreen's half-mile paved oval for Grocery Outlet Night, taking the main event and walking out with a massive 79-point haul. That performance catapulted the #22 into the overall points lead (136 pts). Apple Cup winner Kahl Cheth #23 dropped to second overall with 132 points, proving that the championship battle is going to be a knife fight all season long.
The chasing pack is tightly bunched. Jason Quatsoe #8 and rookie standout B. Hector Jr #68 are deadlocked for third at 131 points, just five points off the lead. Shane Strimple #57 rounds out the top five with 117 points.
Rookie-of-the-Year watch: B. Hector Jr #68 extended his lead in the rookie class, now sitting at 91 rookie points over C. Forney #72 (69). We now head to Wenatchee for Round 3, where the short track will test the leaders' patience in traffic.

VMRA is a non-profit racing club out of the Northwest. We started in 1986 at Spanaway Speedway with a small group of guys who wanted to keep 1950s through early '70s modified stock car racing alive. Forty years later we're still at it — running circle-track races at Evergreen, Tri-City, Wenatchee, South Sound, and Stateline. American-made pre-1970 cars (with a few specific exceptions), small-block V8s, fiberglass bodies, hand-built in members' shops.
Annual membership is $50. Download the 2026 Membership Application (PDF), print it, fill it out, sign it, and bring it to the next race weekend with cash or a check made out to VMRA. Or email the board at vmrainfo@gmail.com with questions. Your car needs to pass tech against the construction rules — pre-1970 American body, 2,950 lb minimum, 370 cubic inches max, no fuel injection, no blowers, no coil-overs. Tires are 10-inch-wide Hoosier take-offs (ST1 left, ST2/ST3 right), procured by VMRA. Show up, walk the paddock, talk to people. That's how everyone gets in.
Vintage modified stock cars — the kind that ran in the '50s, '60s, and early '70s on dirt and pavement ovals across the country. Any American body 1969 or older, plus some 1970-77 compacts (Vega, Pinto, Gremlin) with tech approval. 370 cubic inches max, steel block only, flat-top pistons, carbureted only — no fuel injection, no blowers, no turbos, no nitrous, no alcohol. 2,950 lb minimum with 57% left-side max. 102″ minimum wheelbase. GM 604 sealed crate motors are allowed with no weight break (602 gets a −100 lb break). Real cars built in real shops, not high-dollar spec cars trucked in from somewhere. Full spec is in the 2026-2028 Construction Rules.
